Addressing Your Wisdom Tooth Concerns

If wisdom teeth are causing discomfort for you or your child, book an appointment at Nelson Bay Dental. Our friendly team will conduct a thorough assessment and recommend the optimal course of action.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed by default. However, if they run the risk of crowding or impacting your jaw, removal may be needed. We will clearly explain the options available to you and recommend whichever best meets your requirements and budget.

Rest assured, we will ensure you receive local anaesthetic for the wisdom tooth removal process. Sedation is readily available for nervous patients, and our staff will be on hand to clearly explain every facet of the process. Once the wisdom teeth are removed, we will ensure you receive informed post-treatment advice for maintaining the health of your teeth and gums.

Potential Issues Resulting from Wisdom Teeth

If there is insufficient space in your jaw for wisdom teeth to erupt normally, it can become impacted within the jaw – that is, ‘wedged’ against it. This can, in turn, result in a number of issues for the teeth and gums. Here are just a few examples of the issues that can result from impacted wisdom teeth:

  • Cysts
  • Resorption – resulting in cavities in adjacent teeth
  • Overcrowding of teeth – which could prevent the implementation of essential orthodontics
  • Ulcers
  • Difficulty cleaning teeth
  • Gum swelling & infection

Even if these issues are not present, our Nelson Bay dentists can advise you if they are likely to occur in future, as a result of impacting wisdom teeth.

After Care

Once we have removed any problematic wisdom teeth, our compassionate staff will ensure you receive a personalised after care package. Recovery times will vary, depending on the extent of the work that was required. Here are a few general practices you can take to aid the recovery process:

  • Do not smoke in the days following the surgery
  • Do not use mouthwash or gargle – this may irritate the gums where the surgery has taken place
  • Do not touch the stitches in your gum with your tongue or fingers
  • Avoid food that has seeds or granules that could result in the stitches coming undone

Should you have any concerns following your treatment, feel free to get in touch. We will respond to your enquiries ASAP.

Symptoms of Impacting Wisdom Teeth

If you or your child have the following symptoms, it could indicate problems associated with wisdom teeth:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bad breath
  • A lingering bad taste in the mouth after eating certain foods
  • Redness of the mouth
  • Jaw pain
  • Tender gums
  • Cysts around a tooth

As these symptoms could also indicate a plethora of other dental issues, we recommend booking an appointment with us. Our staff will conduct a detailed assessment and get to the root cause of the problem, keeping you informed every step of the way.

It is important to diagnose wisdom teeth that could result in crowding and impacting early. Removing at an earlier stage can eliminate discomfort and costly surgeries that may be needed further down the line.
